In 1996, the European Works Council Directive came into force, which led to large enterprises operating across the European Union needing to establish groups and forums for the purposes of informing and consulting employees. By their very nature, these meetings are multi-lingual and the directive specifically mentions the requirement for simultaneous interpretation to ensure that all participants can understand the proceedings and contribute in their mother tongue.
