Simultaneous interpretation is typically used when meetings and conferences have participants from different countries who need to overcome the language barrier. By using simultaneous interpreters, all participants are able to speak and listen in their native language, enhancing communications and increasing understanding.

Simultaneous interpreters will listen in one language whilst at the same time interpreting into another language. As a result, presentations and discussions can proceed at the same pace as ordinary single language conferences, allowing the most efficient use of time and enabling delegates to get through twice as much work as any other form of interpretation would allow.

Simultaneous interpretation differs from consecutive interpretation where the presenter has to pause at regular intervals to allow the interpretation to be given, and ad-hoc interpretation, where only the general gist of the conversation is conveyed to the listener. As the nature of their work demands extreme concentration, simultaneous interpreters normally work in pairs, each interpreter alternating with his or her partner.
